Bad Luck
I am now back in Wellington, New Zealand after suffering a very long and painful journey from Crete, Greece via Athens, Munich, Los Angeles, and Auckland. I left Saturday morning and arrived Monday morning.
The bad luck is that they lost my bags from LAX to AUK. They also lost my bags on my way to Florence. I hope this bad luck does not continue on my next overseas trip.

I sympathise with your plight. I had my bag lost twice three years ago, Frankfurt to Heathrow and Frankfurt to Rome. The second time it took several days to get it back because I left Rome the next morning before the next flight from Frankfurt, and then it was in the hands of the laidback Italians!
Ironically I've just arrived back from Europe too and coincided briefly with you in Florence (10th-12th). I was there for a wedding though, near Siena, not conferencing. It's a shame I didn't bump into you - it would have been a great story. Last time I bumped into Jennifer on Tower Bridge in London. :-)

yes losing bags is annoying. Perhaps I will use GPS for my bags so I can actually tell where they are in the future.
While in Italy I was thinking of going to Siena on the 3rd or 4th of April but didn't get around to, instead just had a look at the city of Florence. It will be on my list for next time.
I assume you mean Jennifer F? She is doing the PhD thing in England.

GPS could be a good idea, though perhaps it could cause the plane to crash ("turn off electronic devices!") so it may just be safer to avoid Frankfurt. :-)
Siena was great (as was Florence). The duomo is even more rediculously ornate than Florence's or the Vatican.
I didn't know Jennifer was in the UK now. She wasn't three years ago though - she just happened to be in transit for a couple of days, like me. They say it's a small world, but it's still hard to believe...
